NEWS – Ski Area Upgrade

Cutting Loose: A skier in full flight at Cardrona Ski Resort.

Fans of the powdery white stuff will be in for a treat this winter as the Cardrona Alpine Resort expands its skifield and opens up a whole new track.

Phase one of the expansion will include the installation of a chairlift from the Speed Straight section of the access road to the bottom of the Whitestar Express Quad lift, creating the Valley View Quad track.

Between $2 million and $3 million will be spent on the expansion, which will also include a tunnel placed between Valley View and Whitestar Express so that snowboarders and skiers coming from Captains Express are uninterrupted.

Marketing and sales manager Nadia Ellis said the development had been in the pipeline for several years, but Valley View would be open only when weather permitted in its first season. This was because the lower altitude of the track in comparison to the others meant it would not get as much snow, she said.

Phase two, which will begin in the summer of 2010-11, will include the installation of snow-making machines on Valley View so that the track is available all season.
